For over five years, Lomographic photographers (aka “Lomographers”) have been aiming the lenses of their small Colorsplash cameras and firing a colored flash burst at any and every given opportunity. So much so, that you can call this act of “Colorsplashing” a true artistic mass-movement for film photography! But this begs an important question: where does the motivation and inspiration for all of this color-drenched hyperactivity stem from? The Lomographic Society & Staple Design have teamed up to find out. Over the course of the past year, we’ve collected images, bits of research, personal testimonials, ancient truths, and wholly unscientific tidbits to discover and catalog the “Chakras of Colorsplashing” – intense spiritual forces and behavioral motivations that power the stunning creativity and fairly shutter-obsessive nature of Colorsplash photographers. Based in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Staple Design is an artistic force to be reckoned with. It all started back in 1997, when Jeff Staple – its founder and President – started sneaking into the 4th floor silkscreen lab of NYC’s Parsons School of Design. Night after night, he snuck in with his friend and a pillowcase of blank tees. It started with a 12-piece shirt order. 12 became 24. 24 became 36. It just kept snowballing. From these early beginnings, Staple developed a reputation for exceptional graphic artistry and fantastic merchandising skills. They design and sell their own seasonal fashion collection, maintain their own retail shops, provide art direction for several groundbreaking magazines, and release a steady stream of insanely collectible limited-edition products with big-name brands. www.stapledesign.com |
